The state of California has an enviable reputation as one of the most environmentally conscious states in the entire country, and it's liable to just get better thanks to an innovative zero-emissions rail line being planned for the Golden State. This information is only a few days old, but I think it's an exciting advance in terms of California train travel. What California is hoping to do, is create 700 miles of high-tech, state-of-the-art rail lines for Northern California travel, or if you wish, you could use it to travel Southern California. According to a press release posted on February 7th, "The California High-Speed Rail Authority Board yesterday authorized a study to determine the feasibility of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions for the power needs of the 700-mile electric high-speed train system. The study, timed to be completed by June of this year, will focus on costs, potential location of facilities and partnerships with utilities for on-site production of clean energy sources." If this is implemented as described, this could add a whole new layer of green to California train travel. I really wish them luck with this bold, visionary plan for the future of California train travel.
